van heutszplein kampen

official presentation on the 13th of october 2011

A mosaic artwork by Barbara Broekman decorates ‘het Van Heutszplein’ in Kampen since October 2011. This artwork has been applied on the two roundings in the square, that refer to the historical city walls and towers. A wavy pattern is to be seen on both the in- and outsides of the roundings, a reference to the IJssel that runs alongside the square.
Icons representing highlights of the history of Kampen can be discovered in the pattern on the insides: from 1.000 - 1.800 and from 1.800 up to the present.

The rounding up to 1.800 depicts for instance the war with Zwolle, the city book of Kampen and the Iconoclasm. On the second rounding one can see amongst others

the flodding of the city, the cigar industry, the depopulation of Schokland and the contemporary reorganization of water supply.

The information signs next to the roundings may help those who have difficulties deciphering the images from the ‘Canon of Kampen’.
