In the creation of the work I was inspired by the death of my mother in 1997. One particular night, with the sky alight with the dazzling colours of the sunset, I was overcome by a huge sense of loss, and the overpowering emotion and the fiery sunset combined to overwhelm me and fill me with the sense of spirituality. It is this experience that I have tried to capture in the design of the spatial object. The design is based on existing pictures of my mother, which have been transformed in such a way that the human form is barely visible, let alone recognisable. Viewers are free to experience their own emotions and have their own sensory experiences.
