Mother and Child, 1996-2008

Mother and Child unites two central themes in Barbara’s oeuvre: cultural diversity in our society as well as various aspects of being a woman. This series is an ode to the bond between mother and child, which according to Broekman is the only unconditional relationship possible between two people.

Based on black and white photos of mothers from different countries together with their children, Broekman created complex double images by merging these images with black and white photos of landscapes, ornamental or textile patterns typical to the countries from which the mothers and children come from. Finally Broekman introduced colours that she insitinctively associates with that particular country.
